This Week I Learned: Ukrainian History [2022–03–04]

Like probably many people, I felt a sudden need to know more about Ukraine and its history in recent times.

I learned a lot from the podcast episodes below. My favourite take-aways: some Vikings moved into the existing Slavic town of Kyiv about 1000 years ago, long before Moscow existed. Their name, the “Rus”, comes from a word for “rowing”, because that’s how they got down rivers from Scandinavia into Eastern Europe. For centuries they lived in the orbit of Constantinople, the Eastern Roman Empire.
